Destination-specific tips
- •Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees. Many temples have sarongs available for rent or loan if needed.
- •Be mindful of the 'wai' (a prayer-like greeting with palms pressed together) as a sign of respect. It's customary to wai elders and monks.
- •Tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water, filtered water from reputable sources, or use a water purifier.
- •Bargaining is common in markets, but do so politely and with a smile. Start with a reasonable offer.
- •Be aware of the 'spirit houses' found outside most homes and businesses; these are offerings to local spirits and should be treated with respect.
