Getting around
India's vastness is best navigated by a combination of domestic flights for long distances and its extensive, albeit sometimes slow, rail network for shorter hops. While rental cars with drivers are available, they are often impractical for city navigation due to traffic and road conditions. Book train tickets well in advance, especially for popular routes and classes.
Insider tips
- •Indian Railways booking can be complex; use the official IRCTC website or app, and book months ahead for popular trains. Consider Tatkal tickets for last-minute bookings, but be prepared for high demand.
- •While major cities accept cards, carry sufficient cash for smaller vendors, auto-rickshaws, and rural areas. ATMs are widely available but can sometimes be empty.
- •Download offline maps and translation apps. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but local languages can be very different.
- •Be aware of the 'Indian time' phenomenon; schedules can be flexible. Factor in buffer time for travel and appointments.
- •Respect local customs regarding dress, especially at religious sites. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is generally recommended.
- •Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for good service, especially in hotels and restaurants. A small amount is usually sufficient.
