Destination-specific money tips

  • The Galápagos National Park entrance fee ($100 for most foreigners) is a one-time payment, often not included in tour prices, so budget for it separately.
  • While USD is the currency, always have small bills and coins for local purchases, especially on smaller islands or with smaller vendors.
  • Credit card fees can be high, and not all establishments accept them. Always ask about surcharges beforehand.
  • ATMs on the islands can be unreliable and run out of cash. Withdraw sufficient funds on the mainland (Quito or Guayaquil) if possible.
  • Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for excellent service, especially for guides and boat crews. 5-10% is a common range.
