Destination-specific money tips

  • Street food is incredibly cheap and delicious; don't be afraid to try it from busy stalls.
  • While ATMs are plentiful, some smaller local banks may charge higher fees for foreign withdrawals. Use ATMs attached to major banks.
  • Bargaining is expected in markets and with some smaller shops, but less so in modern stores or tourist-focused restaurants.
  • Taxis can be tricky; always ensure the meter is used or agree on a price beforehand. Grab is generally more reliable and transparent.
  • USD and EUR are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, but you'll almost always get a better rate paying in VND.
