Getting around

The Netherlands has an exceptionally efficient and integrated public transport system, dominated by trains operated by NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen). High-speed rail connects major cities, and frequent local services make intercity travel seamless. Renting a car is generally not recommended for travel within the Randstad due to congestion and parking challenges, but can be useful for exploring more rural areas.

Insider tips

  • Consider purchasing an OV-chipkaart for public transport; it's a reloadable card valid on all forms of public transport (trains, trams, buses, metros). Single-use tickets are often more expensive.
  • Bike locks are essential in the Netherlands, even for short stops. Bike theft is common, especially in larger cities.
  • Many museums, particularly the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, require advance online booking, even for peak times. Book well ahead to avoid disappointment.
  • While card payments are widely accepted, carrying a small amount of cash can be useful for smaller vendors or market stalls.
  • The Dutch train system is excellent for day trips, but check the NS website for 'dagkaart' (day tickets) promotions, which can offer significant savings for unlimited travel on a specific day.
  • Be aware of dedicated cycle paths and the rules governing them; cyclists have priority and move very quickly.
