Day trips from Interlaken

The trips worth a full day, with travel times, booking windows and verdicts.

Interlaken is less a destination than a launchpad: the town sits between two lakes with the Jungfrau railways fanning out above it, and every classic Bernese Oberland sight is a day trip by rail, cable car or boat — no car needed. The catch is cost and sequencing: Jungfraujoch is one of the most expensive excursions in the Alps and takes most of a day. Here is the version with the details filled in.

Logistics for the Interlaken trips that actually reward a full day — trains, timings and verdicts, with the date the facts were last checked.

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe

Getting there: The fastest route runs via Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express gondola — about 1½ hours from Interlaken Ost. The classic cogwheel route via Kleine Scheidegg takes longer and is worth riding in one direction.
Cost: Fares vary by season, route and pass, and they are high — check the current price on jungfrau.ch before you plan the day. From 1 May to 31 October 2026 the Good Morning ticket takes 20% off on the first two connections of the day, if you leave the summit by 13:17; it can't be combined with Half Fare or Swiss Travel Pass discounts.
Booking: A seat reservation costs CHF 10 and is recommended at busy times — trains fill up in good weather. For some tickets, such as the Good Morning ticket, it is mandatory from 1 May to 31 October 2026. Check the summit webcam the same morning: paying alpine prices to stand inside a cloud is the classic Interlaken mistake.

Go early. Up top: the Sphinx terrace at 3,571 m with the view down the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps; the Ice Palace; and Lindt's chocolate shop, billed as the highest in the world. Budget 2–2½ hours at the top, and take stairs slowly — you are well above 3,000 m.

Spectacular, and priced accordingly. Worth it once, on a clear day. On a cloudy forecast, switch to the Schilthorn or First and keep the money.

Schilthorn / Piz Gloria via Lauterbrunnen and Mürren

Getting there: Train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen (about 20 minutes). From there, either via Stechelberg and the world's steepest cable car — a 159.4% gradient, running since December 2024, four minutes up to Mürren — or via the cable car to Grütschalp and the narrow-gauge railway along the ridge to Mürren. Interlaken Ost to Mürren takes a little under an hour. From Mürren, new cable cars run via Birg to the 2,970 m summit.
On top: Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant featured in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. One station down at Birg, the Thrill Walk: a walkway along the cliff with a glass floor, free to use.

Do it as a loop: up via Stechelberg, back via Mürren's car-free main street and the Grütschalp line, and leave time for Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen village.

Our pick for value: a proper village on the way, the steepest cable car in the world, and Bond-film views at the top. If you only do one summit and budget matters, price this one first.

Grindelwald + First

Getting there: Train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald (about 35 minutes), then a short walk to the First gondola, which takes about 25 minutes to the top.
On the mountain: The First Cliff Walk; the trail to Bachalpsee, under an hour each way, for the postcard lake with the peaks mirrored in it; and paid adventures — the First Flyer zipline, Mountain Carts and Trottibikes.

Half-day friendly: gondola up early, Cliff Walk, the Bachalpsee walk with a picnic, carts or Trottibikes on the way down, then coffee in Grindelwald under the Eiger north face.

The best summer half-day from Interlaken, and the one to pick with kids or mixed-energy groups — everyone chooses their own adrenaline level.

Lakes Thun + Brienz by boat

Getting there: Boats run on both lakes from Interlaken, and the Swiss Travel Pass covers them.
Highlights: Lake Thun: Spiez castle and Thun's old town. Lake Brienz: the turquoise water itself, and Giessbach Falls — a boat stop with a funicular, running since 1879, up to the Grandhotel Giessbach.

Pick one lake per day — Brienz for scenery, Thun for castles and town life. The Giessbach Falls stop makes the best short version: boat out, falls, lunch at the hotel, boat back.

The weather-proof-ish and budget option — with a Swiss Travel Pass the boats cost nothing extra. A good recovery day between mountain days.

Lucerne — the city day

Getting there: The Luzern–Interlaken Express over the Brünig Pass takes 1 hour 50 minutes from Interlaken Ost and runs every hour, past Lake Lungern — one of Switzerland's prettiest rides.

Chapel Bridge, the old town, the Lion Monument and an hour on the lakefront. Rigi or Pilatus bolt on if the weather holds — but that makes a very long day.

The rainy-day ace: when the Oberland summits are in cloud, Lucerne still works — and the train ride there is half the show.

Passes — do the maths first

The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains and the lake boats. Mountain railways and cable cars have their own rules and pass discounts, and the Good Morning ticket can't be combined with them — price your actual plan before you buy anything.

Weather rule

Decide on Jungfraujoch or the Schilthorn the night before at the earliest, after checking the summit webcams and the MeteoSwiss forecast. Cloudy up top? Switch that day to a lake or to Lucerne.

Timing

Yes — all of them. Every trip here runs on trains, boats and cable cars from Interlaken Ost or West, and Mürren and Wengen are car-free anyway.

What should I do from Interlaken on a rainy or cloudy day?
