Destination-specific money tips

  • While cards are widely accepted in tourist zones, always have some cash for smaller villages, local markets, and parking meters.
  • Be wary of standalone ATMs in very touristy spots, as they often charge higher fees. Use ATMs attached to reputable banks if possible.
  • Car rental can be surprisingly affordable outside peak season, but factor in insurance and fuel costs which can add up.
  • Eating away from the absolute beachfront or main plazas in popular towns can significantly reduce food costs.
  • While tipping isn't mandatory, rounding up the bill or leaving a small percentage (5-10%) for exceptional service is a nice gesture.
