Destination-specific money tips

  • ATMs are readily available in Luang Prabang, but check your bank's foreign transaction fees. Some ATMs may charge a local fee.
  • While credit cards are accepted in larger establishments, always carry enough Lao Kip (LAK) for markets, street food, and smaller shops.
  • USD and EUR are sometimes accepted for larger purchases or accommodation, but you'll usually get a better rate using LAK.
  • Bargaining is expected in markets, but do so politely. Prices for food and local transport are generally very affordable.
  • Tipping is not mandatory but is a nice gesture for exceptional service; round up bills or leave a small amount for guides and drivers.
