Destination-specific money tips

  • ATMs are plentiful, but using them in smaller towns or less reputable locations might incur higher fees. Stick to major banks in Marrakech.
  • While credit cards are accepted in many tourist spots, always carry cash for the souks and smaller eateries. Bargaining is expected, and cash makes it easier.
  • Tipping is a significant part of the service economy. Aim for 10-15% at restaurants if service charge isn't included, and tip guides and drivers appropriately.
  • Be aware that some prices in tourist areas, especially for souvenirs in the souks, can be inflated. Don't be afraid to negotiate firmly but politely.
  • Mint tea is often offered for free in shops; accepting it usually implies you'll at least browse. Be prepared for gentle sales pitches.
