Getting around
Intercity travel is primarily by private taxi, JETT buses, or rental car. Rental cars offer the most flexibility for exploring remote sites, but driving in Amman can be challenging. Domestic flights are limited and generally not practical for tourist itineraries. Border crossings to Israel and Egypt are straightforward.
Insider tips
- •Book Petra by Night tickets separately and in advance if you wish to attend; it is not included with standard Petra entry.
- •While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants, carry plenty of cash (Jordanian Dinars) for smaller shops, taxis, and entry fees outside major tourist hubs.
- •Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women.
- •Taxis are metered in Amman, but agree on a fare beforehand for longer trips or outside the capital. Consider using ride-sharing apps like Uber or Careem within Amman for transparent pricing.
- •Wadi Rum tours often include overnight stays in Bedouin camps. These range from basic to luxurious, so choose based on your comfort level. Stargazing is exceptional.
- •The Jordan Pass, purchased online before arrival, includes your tourist entry visa fee and admission to over 40 attractions, including Petra. It's often the most cost-effective option for most tourists.
